The post-Christmas period can leave many of us feeling a bit gloomy.

Going back to work, an unhealthy bank account, festive weight gain, bleak weather; whatever it is that’s getting you down, these simple tips can help.

1. Exercise

You may not feel like heading outside for a brisk walk, but you’ll feel so much better for it. Exercise can do wonders for our wellbeing and mood. Why not make getting active one of your New Year’s resolutions?

2. Get some daylight

With the days being so short, many of us can feel the effects of the “winter blues” or seasonal affective disorder (SAD). That’s why you should take the time to head out during the day and get what little sunlight you can. Click here for more tips on how to see off SAD.

3. Plan something

After the excitement of Christmas, we can be left feeling at a bit of a loose end, but a good way to alleviate that feeling is to plan something to look forward to. Depending on your budget, you could start arranging a night out with your friends or booking a trip away.

4. Practise mindfulness

5. Eat healthy

When we’re feeling down, it can be tempting to comfort eat. But eating a healthy, balanced diet of vegetables, nuts and fish can help combat both lethargy and low mood.

6. Start a hobby

January is the perfect time to discover something new. Local colleges tend to offer fairly cheap evening courses in a whole host of subjects, from pottery and painting to languages and counselling. Community centres are also a great place to scout for a new hobby.
